Hardware: PS3
Sony's PS3 is here and while it has arrived with a large price tag, a lack of good games, or a robust online network to rival Xbox live it still is a impressive gaming console. What I mean by impressive is that the system has a lot of potential in terms of graphics and media functionality.
Like the PSP the PS3 can do a whole lot more than just play games. It can be used to view movies, pictures, surf the web, and a bunch of other things. All that stuff is cool but what about the games? Don't get me wrong there are some good games on the system right now, like Resistance fall of Man and Motorstorm. But you have to understand that right now the system does have a lack of compelling games to play, but some of the must have games are going to drop soon like Lair, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Heavenly Sword. So if your debating whether or not to purchase a PS3 your going to have think what type of games you like and whats coming for the PS3.
The PS3 uses the cross media bar that was introduced on the PSP to access the functions of the PS3 which doesn't feel as nice as the blade style menus on the Xbox360. Sony is also using the PS3 as a way to push there Blu-ray disc format which is in part the reason why the price for the system is so high. Sony's online system is also quite bare and really doesn't feel like much of a community when compared to Xbox live, but it's still early so if Sony can make good on their promises then things could turn out good.
Price is still the main barrier to entry here for the PS3. With such a high price, not enough compelling software, and a lackluster online system its hard to jump onto the PS3. I would say that by this fall the PS3 will have those good games and if HOME works out the online community should start to form. I find it hard to recommend the system right now but by the end of this year the PS3 will be something every gamer should get.
